ABOUT US The Mission to Mexico is a non-profit all-volunteer organization that provides emergency vehicles and equipment to impoverished towns and villages in Mexico. We have acquired Ambulances, Fire Trucks, Police Cars, Handicap Transportation and other rescue and medical equipment for these towns.
Vehicles are driven down and delivered to the people of Mexico by volunteer drivers. During the drive the vehicles are loaded up with donated medical supplies, school supplies, computers, and other items that enhance the life and safety of the towns in need.
There are towns and villages in Mexico that have populations of 25 to 75 thousand that don’t have a single fire engine or ambulance. Vehicles and equipment up here that is deemed no longer usable are considered top of the line in these cities.
HOW THE MISSION TO MEXICO BEGAN… The Lopez family owns and operates El Pueblito, a Mexican family-style restaurant located in the City of Gig Harbor. The family is from a town in Mexico called Ayutla Jal. Two years ago while in Ayutla Jal visiting family and friends, the Lopez family witnessed a car accident where four people were injured. Sadly, three of the victims – including a child – died on the way to the hospital.
Their deaths may have been prevented. The town of Ayutla Jal did not have a medic unit or the training to care for injured people while transporting them to the hospital, which is over an hour away. Not only did the town not have a medic unit, they did not have a fire truck, police cars or an ambulance. One pickup truck was all they had for the town’s police… to serve over 25,000 people living there!
After hearing about this incident, police officers and firefighters in our area stepped in to help. In the spring of 2007, the group obtained surplus police cars, a medic unit, and a fire truck tender. Another group called ‘Fireman Crossing Borders’ obtained firefighting equipment to stock the medic unit with supplies.
In September of 2007, Mission to Mexico volunteers drove the donated vehicles down to Ayutla Jal. This was the first of many trips offering vehicles and support to our Mexican neighbors in need. |
